This London Fashion Week, BEYOND LIMITS showcased an unmissable exhibition of 12 forward-thinking Polish designers at Protein Studios in Shoreditch. Aiming to spotlight the country’s thriving creative scene on the global stage, the exhibition featured the forward-thinking and unconventional work of rising stars across the fashion and jewellery space. 

As part of Fashion Scout’s LFW programming, the curation embodied not a single, unified aesthetic but rather a common approach to the design process. Namely, a commitment to self-expression and unmoored creativity. 

This dynamic ethos translated into pieces which pushed the boundaries of the traditional use-value of clothing and jewellery, edging into the realm beyond pure utility where art and play meet fashion. This tension between traditional modes of craftsmanship and contemporary innovation were on full display.

Representing the thread of fashion as art, pieces by Hubert Pelc and Katarzyna Konieczka exhibited fashion’s full capacity as a medium for self expression with sculptural forms and abstract elements.  

Leaning into the Polish origins of the curation by exploring the country’s folklore, culture and history were designers Martyna Konieczny and RAD DUET. Here, heritage motifs met surprising forms and pieces exhibited in leading Polish museums caught the eye.

Intriguing explorations of fashion’s relationship to gender were also on display. KARDASJAN’s sensual menswear challenged typical framings of the body whilst Robert Czerwik’s intricately detailed pieces evoked the label’s muses: strong women throughout history.  

Clever and sustainable reworkings of different materials shone light on the exhibition’s forward-thinking theme. Tomasz Armada’s surprising transformation of recycled materials explored themes of the country’s values and identity, whilst Michał Szulc’s purposeful design strategy incorporated deadstock materials. 

A great variance of approaches and styles were evident in the show’s jewellery offerings. Radek Anais Larós’ sculptural, art-inspired goldsmithing was complemented by Stettin Jewellery’s experimental riffs on traditional goldsmithing. Likewise, Rzucidło’s contemporary reinterpretation of tribal and ethnic jewellery alongside Anna Samków’s use of jagged forms combined with precious gemstones embodied the exhibition’s investigation of the old and the new. 

By bringing together a variety of exciting experimental designers, the BEYOND LIMITS: Polish Visionaries exhibition successfully spotlighted the country’s dynamic creative scene this London Fashion Week.
