Oscars 2023: The 15 best looks

The annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre on 13 March, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Celebrities across the film and music industry gathered for the final major event in the awards season calendar.

Janelle Monaé simply knocked it out the park with this Vera Wang number. I mean, who looks like this? Such a sensational slay in the orange (melanin-complimenting) wrap-around bottom with the trailing skirt in combination with the monochrome black Bardot number, sitting pretty on the star’s waist. The black choker with the gem centrepiece to match the top is a thing of dreams and the pinned hair back was truly the way to go to bring all the focus on the look.

Rihanna never disappoints. Period. Yes, she wore a lovely blue number on the carpet, but I really like the embellishments of this flowy, transparent top and trousers piece for her Oscars performance on stage. The opera gloves look always stays giving.

‘Miss Flo’ Pugh looked radiant in her Bratz-doll like high heels paired with a Valentino gown – a moment. Her hair recently is serving edge and the Tiffany and co. statement necklace and eye makeup add to this perfectly.

Eva Longoria beamed in a floor-length Zuhair Murad couture beaded, tulle gown with bishop sleeves. The plunging neckline and chic skinny scarf look added to this casual serve with the actress’ hair slicked back.

Mindy Kaling tried not one, but two Vera Wang dresses for the Academy Awards – posting both this white dress and the same version in black to her Instagram. The writer and actress works both colours effortlessly, and I can’t help but notice that her style choices have had a glow up in the past year (we see you new stylist).

Okay, Hunter Schafer is wearing a slither of material here and doing it amazingly well. The actress and model wore the Ann Demeulemeester collection piece by Ludovic de Saint Sernin. Not a head was left unturned.

One thing Tracee Ellis Ross is going to do is have fun. My personal future fashion icon made her presence known in Balmain, wearing a sleek, black velvet trouser look with a sheer, silk shawl on top like a skirt. The opera gloves came out to play again and the cream, textured overcoat and angled hat paired with the statement earrings simply topped off the entire outfit.

Halle Bailey stunned in a golden and silver looking gown with matching heels for the Vanity Fair after party. I definitely preferred this to her blue gown number for the awards ceremony, mainly because the top of this gown is shaped more beautifully and the metallic affect screams superstar.

Mindy, again, makes it onto the favourites list – I did say her style has grown. This shimmery, scaled floor-length Prabal Gurung dress shone brightly with the chain straps to compliment and match her eyeshadow of choice.

Cardi B delivered once again (following her deep blue Grammy number), wearing a red, ruched Robert Won number with a veil to match. There was a subtle party in the back with a corset fit to give sex appeal, whilst the business in the front gave chic and sophisticated with the scarf flowing behind the rapper and a trail following behind her.

Julia Garner gave a surprising serve with this sleek, sheer black gown from Off White. The bleach blonde, slicked back hair makes it even better. The Ozark star paired the look with Jimmy Choo shoes and a bag in tow besides her husband, Mark Foster from Foster the People.

Sabrina and Idris Elba looked as radiant as ever with Sabrina stealing the limelight with the sparkly, trailing dress. My favourite part about it, besides the embellishments is definitely the seashell-type breast cups on top and the shaping leading down to her waist and hips, before the rest of the dress falls down so elegantly.

Usher brought it for the men at Vanity Fair’s bash in this all white suit with a creative collar on the blazer and double buttons for a cool ‘fit.

I love, love, love the shaping up top on this black Bardot, corset-type ‘fit Tems dazzled in for the after party. Her sleek ponytail and iced accessories make the look pop and as usual, Tems is wearing the look and not the other way around.

These two always somehow make it onto my radar – obviously my younger self was in love with the Jonas Brothers, but Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner honestly know how to dress well together and do it best in Louis Vuitton. The stand alone pictures of Turner give the dress more justice with the bedazzled cape and the sheer front to show legs eleven. Meanwhile, Joe is giving Italian blue steel and serving in a matching black, but velvet and floral suit – trés bien.
