The shining light this week has been the entertainment world blessing us with not one but two award shows. The highlight of these awards, next to seeing our favourites perform on stage bringing some semblance of normality, is also the showcasing of the music stars’ greatest ‘fits for the red carpet, the performance and afters.
The Billboard Music Awards on Monday 24 May were hosted by Nick Jonas in Los Angeles and saw some show-stopping looks from artists that really ‘understood the assignment’, didn’t come to play, and collaborated with stylists that get it.

SZA arrived serving old Hollywood glamour hair and face, and also b-o-d-y. Props where due because you have to know you’re a goddess to pull this off. Combining e-girl blonde fringe dye in her Hollywood curls, really cemented this look whilst SZA’s staple butterfly lashes and beaming lipgloss’d smile acted as accessories themselves alongside the beautiful ring stack she had going on for some extra bling.

Wearing Balmain, Doja Cat made her moment in this jailhouse striped two piece and the turquoise marble-stoned tablet on her chest. The bardot worn on top matching with the floor-running flares really gave festival free-spirit chic, accompanied by the wing-like pleated sleeves. Not to mention, her earrings encompassed real, living venus fly traps. Styled by Brett Alan Nelson for all of her looks this night, Doja came to make lasting impressions and succeeded.

Doja Cat’s looks continued on stage with another Balmain ensemble but with Maison Margiela and her white circular earrings from Lillian Shalom. The hair was everything – gelled edges with the two front plaits and the metal, silver hair accessories to tie around the red-hued braids, giving warrior and Pop Queen in one. Her leg pleated (what we’ll call) curtains swished around the Billboard stage as she looked snatched with the accessorised white belt, holdall and black thigh band channelling (Mr and) Mrs Smith.

Can’t apologise to continue to stan Doja, when she pulled out three very different looks in one night. Dubbed by fellow celebrities in her Instagram comments as her “Bowie look”, Doja wore Issey Miyake for the Billboard afters along with burgundy platforms peeking out at the bottom of those futuristic trousers. As per Doja’s brand, fans also couldn’t ignore the innuendo from the trousers/cut out skirt that she adorned in her two piece. Are they balloon trousers? Is it a new take on a skirt? Who knows for sure, but Doja does know how to make the eccentric make sense.

Alicia Keys wore custom-made Balmain SS21 to perform a medley celebrating 20 years since her first album. The singer, (who famously made the choice to go without makeup since 2016 due to beauty pressures on women and her own reliance on it) was glowing and beautifully humble despite commanding the stage in her statement tie-dye denim blazer, trousers and hat piece.

This custom-made Valentino rose pink three-piece really complimented Alicia Keys and her soft, earthly nature.

Gabrielle Union was one actress that brought it to match the music stars at the awards, wearing custom-made Prada and draped in Bulgari jewellery. Who said sequins aren’t great? These white crystal-resembling sequins attached to Mrs Union-Wade’s dress are a wonder and truly made her sparkle. The cut of this Prada gown is really what makes it, with a plunging neckline and hourglass, classy shape to boot.

Machine Gun Kelly wore a sharp black suit from the Balmain SS21 archive, along with his white shirt completely unbuttoned – we’re not complaining. Megan Fox was in tow with a Thierry Mugler extreme cut black dress topped with a sheer fabric for the bottom half. It’s undeniable that these two know how to turn up and make a statement as a ‘power couple’. I mean… Those. Heels.

Actor Leslie Odom Jr stood out for the men’s outfits this time for me, with the canary yellow long overcoat breathing some fresh air into the awards. Odom paired his coat well with the smart-looking turtle neck worn underneath.

In true awards presenter style, Nick Jonas wore multiple 'fits for the BBMAs including his arrival wearing Fendi in green (the colour of the season) followed by this blended autumnal-coloured suit that I am so here for. Also, love the draping Dolce & Gabbana sheer and crystallised look from Priyanka Chopra Jonas with a metallic gold belt similar to one Beyoncé has sported beautifully before too.

Gabby Barrett is a singer I was not aware of before this, but as she arrived wearing Nicholas JeBran in this golden number that was just done suitably well for an awards show, I had to give props. I thought it was just personal preference but I’m glad that some celebrities know – when in doubt, go for the gold or black.

Kehlani wore a stark red three piece from Tony Ward. I’m not usually a fan of taffeta types of material – but I felt Kehlani should have some recognition because she pulled it off well regardless. The sparkly bralet definitely adds something to be coveted.
The iHeartRadio Awards took place on Thursday 27 May at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Usher.

Yes, this is Doja making another appearance on this roundup. But we just have to commend how she gives us different versions of herself at all opportunities (maybe she was a gemini in another life). This sheer khaki green draping dress, tied at the neck, is everything from Brandon Maxwell. Doja’s bronze bauble earrings add an extra element of class and sophistication, balancing out with her green statuesque heels from D’ACCORI. This colour is making waves this year.

Lastly for Amala (Doja Cat), she performed in a heavenly, pastoral white lace dress from Tia Usher. With subtle waves in her hair and white casual trainers from Thousand Fell, alongside aliens no less, Doja served up the alternative singer version of herself that we’ve come to know and love showing that there isn’t simply one dimension to her persona as an artist.

Ariana Grande made her stage return, performing with The Weeknd in this deep purple satin-looking two piece. The silver layered necklace adds the extra something to this ‘fit whilst keeping it classy and sophisticated with the halter neck and keyhole top piece that was tied in a bow for a party at the back.

Megan thee Stallion could probably pull off a bin bag – but we’re glad she chose this sparkly gold sheer number instead. The one-shoulder fit is definitely well suited to Meg and this dress snatches her to the Gods; the sleek long hair placed as is was a good choice too – keeping it simple and chic.

Another one from Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox because they’re giving alternative rock version of Barbie and Ken. The long nails on MGK are reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands and the thrown together suit kind of compliments this thought. MGK wrote on his Instagram that the pink stitching is “literally my shoelace” and that he picked up the butterfly addition out of a flower pot. We’re not completely sure why any of this works, but it just does.

H.E.R got it right at the iHeartRadio awards on both counts. The gold sparkly suit with matching shades and a golden locket is complimentary to her tone and is the perfect bold look for a red carpet, paired with her signature sweet ponytail. In tribute to Elton John (who was also serenaded by Demi Lovato), H.E.R also wore Alexandre Vauthier trousers, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, Brea Stinson on the top and Isabel Marant for her white and black sunglasses. The high pony and shades signature combo will always be elite for H.E.R.
