At London Fashion Week, Hu Bing marked ten years on the British fashion scene with HUBING SELECTS: EQUAL ETHEREAL, a platform showcasing emerging Chinese designers to an international audience.
The runway featured the Golden Age collection, led by Aya Maruyama, with menswear by Wang Yijie and womenswear by An Da. Fabrics were developed by textile innovator Lu Jianping, highlighting jacquard, sustainable fibers, and advanced materials. The collection emphasized the principle of “fabric first,” with silhouettes ranging from tailored jackets to flowing robes, combining Eastern craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Hu Bing was joined by Mr. Xie Fangming of the China Fashion Designers Association, emphasizing industry collaboration and designer exchange between China and the UK. HUBING SELECTS, launched in 2024, aims to provide a platform for Asian designers to present their work on a global stage, emphasizing materiality, technical skill, and design philosophy.
The show demonstrated a dialogue between heritage and innovation, focusing on fabric-driven design, structured silhouettes, and cultural storytelling, while positioning emerging designers within an international context.
Behind the scenes with Hubing Selects
Q: “Selects” suggests curation—how do you select what goes into your collection/show? Is it pieces, inspirations, collaborators?
I consider multiple dimensions. It’s not only about choosing outstanding pieces of clothing, but also about digging deeply into design inspirations, collaborators, and the cultural stories behind them. HUBING SELECTS, for example, has helped many emerging designers step onto the international stage.
Q: What does “Selects” mean in terms of identity: are you selecting heritage, new talent, experimental design, or a mix?
I see it as a fusion of heritage and innovation. As Karl Lagerfeld once said, we are in a golden age—one that allows us to carefully preserve the essence of the classics while also giving us the courage to explore the unknown and create the trends of the future.
Q: For this season, what was non‐negotiable: the mood, fabric, silhouette—or perhaps a certain theme that drove everything?
The heart of this season is the Golden Age theme, a tribute to the great Pierre Cardin. Modern interpretations of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and high-quality fabrics were indispensable, showcasing a new height of Eastern aesthetics to the world.
Q: Do you collaborate with others (artists, craftspeople, other brands) in creating this collection? If so, can you speak about one collaboration that’s particularly special?
Fabric designer Lu Jianping is one of our most valued collaborators. His textiles are loved by top international brands. He transforms silk into endless possibilities and creates materials tailored to the visions of young designers.
Q: How much audience/buyer feedback influences what you “select”—do you design for customers, for galleries/showrooms, or in conversation with both?
I see myself as a translator for Chinese design. It’s not about simply moving things from East to West, but about conveying the ideas behind Eastern design in a way that resonates with the international fashion community—so they can truly appreciate the talent and craftsmanship of our industry.
Q: How do you strike a balance between curated selections (perhaps more artistic) and commercial viability?
By maintaining a strong sense of aesthetics. Through strict curation and collaborative content creation, I provide a platform for emerging designers to allow artistic design to find its market entry point and achieve commercial success.
Q: Moving forward, do you see Hubing Selects branching into other creative spheres (accessories, installations, digital/virtual components)?
Fashion naturally carries the traits of speed and change, with trends evolving rapidly. We are already expanding into different creative fields: beyond our existing fashion lifestyle channel, we pioneered a metaverse fashion show livestream. In the future, I will continue exploring even more creative territories.
