Ten years ago on 26 June, the indie funk R&B group The Internet brought out their magnum opus, ‘Ego Death’.

The 12-track LP hit the underground R&B and hip-hop scene in 2015, at the midst of the colourful and jamp-packed 2010s when we got hits like Bruno Mars’ Just the Way You Are and Katy Perry’s Firework. With pop and R&B music peaking, The Internet flew under the radar – but not for long as Syd lead the group signed to Odd Future, with Tyler, the Creator at the helm.

The popularisation of Ego Death overtime and the group evolving introduced us to a 16-year-old Steve Lacy, equipped with the electric guitar. We all know the story of how Lacy recorded his own songs with only an iPhone and GarageBand to hand and that catapulted him into fame.

Ego Death brought us enigmatic features from Janelle Monáe on Gabby, Kaytranda on Girl, and Tyler, the Creator on Palace/Curse – a personal favourite. This LP gave us bass guitar heavy tracks, sultry sounds on vengeful songs and Syd’s honey-like vocals. The bass soon became synonymous with The Internet’s carved out sound, leading them to their next and final LP in 2018, ‘Hive Mind’.

Turn back to the tail end of the 2010’s on the release of ‘Hive Mind’ and MGC were finally able to see the group not only perform live, but perform ‘Ego Death’ live, too, to a humble setting at the O2 Academy in Birmingham.

To celebrate ten years of this gem, I strongly encourage running through the album again and being taken through a journey of pure yearning.
