From Beyoncé’s Act ii ‘Cowboy Carter’ to Lana Del Rey’s upcoming country album and Bella Hadid embracing her inner horse girl, the cowboy, yee-haw aesthetics are making their way back into the mainstream. Beyoncé has flaunted the yee-haw aesthetic as part of her Houston, Texas upbringing (with her mother’s Louisiana heritage and father from Alabama) since her earlier music videos: ‘Bug a Boo’, ‘Telephone’, ‘Daddy Lessons’.

From the time that afrobeats went global, and diasporic generations embraced their heritages more loudly — but more precisely, the media paid more attention to it — I wonder if we can continue to see the same with the roots of the western and yeehaw agenda.

For now, we can take some inspiration for the culture and look at the main accessories and features you may indulge in.

Cowboy hats

From Pamela Anderson’s Labour Day inspired hat to Miley Cyrus in Louis Vuitton and Anna Nicole Smith in Von Dutch, all the big brands have done an ode to the yee-haw staple. Old westerns also give value for style inspiration from moments such as Lil Kim as Chastity in the 2003 film ‘Gang of Roses’.

Cowboy boots

From the old Disney kid days of Hannah Montana to the modern rappers with Megan thee Stallion donning their boots and spurs, it’s easy to get inspired by the range of cowboy boots around us.

Western big belts

Cultural artefacts like ‘Coyote Ugly’ (2000) show the yeehaw aesthetic through a y2k sense: cropped and tight waistcoats, low waist leather pants and skirts, and shiny big belts. Disc belts have also come back around in recent fashion.

Waistcoasts, tassels galore

Tassels and dream catcher-like accessories are equally boho style chic and rooted in western styles. Remember when tassels were on everything from bags to ankle boots? Time to dig those cherished items out.

Checked/plaid shirts

Goldie Hawn and Kate Moss sported the yee-haw aesthetic with the hats, booty shorts, props and plaid shirt to match.
